Are we there yet?

After months on the road with no money and nothing more than the clothes on their back he kept the dream of getting to South Africa alive. You can only imagine the trials and hardships and dangerous situations that this young man and his younger brother had on his journey down south, none the less, he kept moving forward. Many times I can imagine they went without food or shelter. When he was telling his story he relayed that on many occasions he had to piggyback his brother because his small legs would easily get weary of walking. Along the way he might have been tempted to just call it a day and settle in that particular country. However pushed by his desire to reach his objective he continued, irregardless of the pain and torment that his feet may have been subjected to, he kept going. Through the pain of seeing his family, being slaughtered before his own young innocent eyes, he kept pushing through. Finally after months on the road he reached the boarders of South Africa. As...

Where to from here? The Desert

There is no hope in the horizon. Engulfed in despair it’s easy to give in. However with the right attitude you CAN change ANY situation to your favour. It is the 3rd month of the year; very soon it will come to a close and with it perhaps you will be the shutting down your goals. You think, “What’s the point?” You have done all you could to materialize your dream; you have exhausted all avenues within your reach. You feel you are at a dead end. But what’s the point of giving up. What is the point of not doing anything? You do have a choice and the right decision is to keep at it. It does not matter if the sky may be grey for you. You might not have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth or with opportunities at your disposal. At your bleakest moment just remember, that the majority of millionaires and billionaires in the world are self made. Just like you and me they were once in your shoes. They struggled to pay their bills, some lost their homes and most were made redundant ...

Where to, from here? -> The Wall

We're right at the beginning of the new year. You should be looking forward to it but you're not. You should be making some major changes that are so lacking in your character, but you're not. You should be taking the all important steps to bring stability and wipe away those debts but you don't. I hear you, it is not because you don't want to change things but you go on to explain that it's because you still don't have the tools to make the wrong in your life right. Last year you tried against all odd, eventhough you didn't have the so called tools or means to succeed, but you tried. You pulled yourself together and decided to change your LIFE! You had so much energy, so much drive. You had a few victories and these steered you on. Until, you came acoss some obtacles, you tried to look for the solution - to make this change happen- but none was within your reach. You knocked on doors until your knuckles turned white and bruised with fustration - mor...

Habits

There are good habits and there are bad habits.  Most of the time it's the bad habits that tend to infiltrate into our daily routines and they seem to stock to you stonger than superglue.  To take themout of your life takes more energy and determination than you can imagine. I read an article about habits in the Monthly FIA magazine which spoke about a young chap called Stefan who had struggled with a drinking problem for years.  His other bad habit was jumping from one girl to the next, as soon as he got what he wanted, he would move onto his next conquest. When he decided to change his habits, he realised that he had to change his environment first.  So he took a drastic decision of moving from sunny St Lucia to the icy cold England.  Leaving behind all his friends helped because they would have easily influenced him to go back to the destructive cycle of drinking and womanizing. You might be thinking well my bad habit does not hurt anyone.  I just arr...

Growing Up

It's never easy to grow up. Countless times when I was young when people asked how old I was - I always used to say , " I will be ... years old next year" or "I will be turning ...years old". For some reasons I was keen to reach adulthood. So much so that when playing with my sister and friends we would act like adults. Dressing up in our parents clothes, nicking food from our homes and bringing it together and cooking up a meal in an old pot in the back yard of our house - I guess that that is where I get my culinary flare from. At times we did naughty things like folding up bits of newspapers and lighting it up and pretending it was a cigarette. One time, on a rainy day, we decided to build a little mud hut right in front of my house! By the way that was my idea. Everything was underway but unfortunately my grandmother popped over for a visit and saw what we doing before the project got underway - she surely beat the daylights out of us that day! All this w...

Proudly South African

My culture is very dear to me. Where I come from makes me the person I am today. I love being a Zulu girl. In fact I don't know of any other tribe that is well known in the whole world like the Zulu's. Even when I started working taking restaurant reservations for a five star hotel this side(UK). When I had to spell letters for customers it was A for alpha, B for bravo and Z for ZULU!! I later discovered that this was used internationally. I was blown away. It is funny how when people are placed in a different environment they tend to conform instead of transform those around. They conform in the sense that they start to speak differently, behave differently and sometimes loose their cultural values that were taught to him since he was young. I know of some people who would go to Johannesburg, SA for a week and then come back to Durban speaking "broken" zulu. I would be like, duh! I think that it's good to be different rather than conforming to foreign attitudes a...
