Growing Up

It's never easy to grow up. Countless times when I was young when people asked how old I was - I always used to say , " I will be ... years old next year" or "I will be turning ...years old". For some reasons I was keen to reach adulthood. So much so that when playing with my sister and friends we would act like adults. Dressing up in our parents clothes, nicking food from our homes and bringing it together and cooking up a meal in an old pot in the back yard of our house - I guess that that is where I get my culinary flare from. At times we did naughty things like folding up bits of newspapers and lighting it up and pretending it was a cigarette. One time, on a rainy day, we decided to build a little mud hut right in front of my house! By the way that was my idea. Everything was underway but unfortunately my grandmother popped over for a visit and saw what we doing before the project got underway - she surely beat the daylights out of us that day! All this w...

Proudly South African

My culture is very dear to me. Where I come from makes me the person I am today. I love being a Zulu girl. In fact I don't know of any other tribe that is well known in the whole world like the Zulu's. Even when I started working taking restaurant reservations for a five star hotel this side(UK). When I had to spell letters for customers it was A for alpha, B for bravo and Z for ZULU!! I later discovered that this was used internationally. I was blown away. It is funny how when people are placed in a different environment they tend to conform instead of transform those around. They conform in the sense that they start to speak differently, behave differently and sometimes loose their cultural values that were taught to him since he was young. I know of some people who would go to Johannesburg, SA for a week and then come back to Durban speaking "broken" zulu. I would be like, duh! I think that it's good to be different rather than conforming to foreign attitudes a...

Lowest Point

Have you ever reached a point in your life when you have felt like it just cannot get any worse, when you feel you have reached rock bottom. Well that is the phase that I am currently going through at this present moment. Bear with me as I attempt to fill you in. Well it all begun about 4 weeks ago when I went into work one Tuesday, I worked for a concession within a Mega clothing Store in Oxford Circus. I had just come back a day before from a lovely chilled out week long break I was feeling refreshed, energised and ready to face the challenges of working in the hectic environment that I worked in. A liitle background on what I was doing at this particular job, well I was kind of in charge of the concession because I worked full time, so if anything went wronge it would all go onto my head. I I started the long day at 8:30am and had to finish at 6pm but most of the time I clocked out at 6:20-6:30pm. I don't mind hard work but working under stressful environment was what I had t...

Forever and ever

The past 3 days have been very laid back and relaxing, its like a  continuous  weekend! I enjoyed that for sure and Im sure everyone else did. But I so wish that I was around my family - my sisters and my parents. The thing is I am miles away they are in South Africa and I am in the UK!!! Its just sooo sad -there are so many things that are going down back home and I am not THERE!! For instance there are 3 new additions in my family- of 2 girls and 1 boy and they have never laid eyes on me. I'm sure when I go home for a visit they will be like 'who the heck are you??' I wouldn't blame them you know, I haven't been home for almost two years now. I know, I know that is a long time and I am promising myself that it is the first and last time that I am staying away from home for such a long period of time. I have actually spoken to people who haven't been to their home countries for over 6 years on end!! It's really sad because they are missing out on so much ...
